Application services
Core services may manage orders, work instructions, genealogy, quality, resources, data collection, reporting and workflow. Modular architectures can separate these functions while preserving a shared operational model.
Operational database
The MES data store holds contextual production records. Retention, archival and reporting architecture should reflect both operational performance and traceability requirements.
Integration layer
APIs, messaging, file exchange or integration platforms connect ERP, QMS, WMS, LIMS, maintenance, historians and analytics. Interface contracts should define ownership and error handling.
Edge / plant connectivity
Gateways or connectors may normalize PLC, SCADA, OPC UA or device data before it reaches MES. Buffering can help manage temporary network or application interruptions.
Identity and authorization
Operators, supervisors, engineers and service accounts need role-appropriate access. Authentication and authorization should align with the organization's IT/OT identity strategy.
